Amazon Drops $2 Billion Bombshell in Latin America Streaming Play
Amazon's Prime Video is planning to invest over $2 billion in Latin America from 2027 through 2030. The move aims to support original shows and movies, as well as sports rights. This investment will more than double the number of locally produced originals compared to 2026, with over 25 new titles scheduled for 2027 alone.
The company's focus on Latin America is driven by its audience growth in the region. Prime Video's sports audience has already topped 20 million households this year, surpassing last year's total. The investment will primarily target Mexico and Brazil, with Argentina, Colombia, and Chile also included in the plan.
Prime Video is expanding its live sports coverage to give viewers more reasons to use the service regularly. After signing an 11-year global NBA agreement, Prime Video expanded its coverage in Brazil and Mexico to over 200 games per season. The company has also added Brazilian soccer to its offerings, with viewing hours for Copa do Brasil more than doubling since it arrived on Prime Video.
Amazon is investing in the region not only through content but also by expanding training programs for local production workers and creative talent. This will help build a larger production base in the region, enabling Amazon to create long-term local content. Furthermore, Prime Video plans to expand its third-party streaming subscriptions and movie rentals into more Latin American markets later this year.
