Amazon Engineer Drowns at Lake Tahoe as Friends Seek Answers
Friends of Amazon software engineer Yadessa Emiru Aga are seeking answers after his accidental drowning at Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor on July 27. The 32-year-old from Austin, Texas, was swimming with others around dusk when he became unresponsive in the water. Bystanders brought him to shore, where deputies and medical personnel tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is investigating Aga's death as an accidental drowning, but several details about what happened remain unconfirmed. In a Reddit post, a person identifying themselves as a close friend asked anyone who was at Sand Harbor that evening to share photographs, video, or firsthand observations.
According to the post, witnesses described Aga swimming with others before cries for help came from the water. Two friends reportedly struggled while trying to reach him, and people on paddleboards helped bring three swimmers ashore. The incident has raised questions about what happened in the final minutes of Aga's life.
A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by Telile Bayissa of Silver Spring, Md., describes Aga as a devoted Christian who was returning from a church conference and spending time with friends at Lake Tahoe when the incident occurred. The memorial fundraiser has collected over $38,000 to help pay for funeral arrangements and bring Aga's body back to Ethiopia.
