Amazon Exceeds 2 Billion Euros in European Second-Hand Sales Amid Recommerce Push
Amazon has announced that its European second-hand business has exceeded 2 billion euros in annual sales, and customers have saved an average of 20% on used items compared to their new counterparts. The company also revealed that it lists over 60 million returned and refurbished items across nearly all product categories in Europe.
The Second Chance Deal Days event is set to run from September 1 to 10 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, offering discounts of up to 50% on high-quality returned and refurbished items. In Brazil, customers can save between 10% and 30%, while in Mexico, discounts start at 10% off selected pre-loved products.
The event will also include authenticated pre-owned luxury goods for the first time, with customers in the UK and Germany able to shop pre-loved bags and accessories from Luxclusif with an additional 15% off already-discounted prices. Amazon has invested over $4 billion in its returns operations across Europe, which includes inspecting all customer returns and selling items at a discount based on their condition.
The company uses AI-powered review summaries and expanded product information to help reduce the return rate, as well as size recommendation technology that reportedly produces satisfaction among more than 90% of customers who purchase the recommended size. Amazon's European director of returns and recommerce, Rory Feldman, stated that demand continues to grow and every product is 'rigorously inspected by our trained specialists'.
