Amazon Expands Drone Delivery Service Across Nearly 500 US Cities
Amazon plans to expand its drone delivery service across nearly 500 U.S. cities by the end of this year, aiming to provide fast and convenient deliveries to suburban areas.
The company's expansion will increase its drone delivery operation more than sixfold nationwide, with services available in metro areas such as Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Boise. However, each drone site will serve multiple cities within a given area, making it difficult to determine the exact number of new sites Amazon plans to launch.
Amazon's drones can carry packages weighing up to 5 pounds and are expected to deliver them in as little as 30 minutes. The service is free for Amazon Prime members ordering over $50 worth of goods, but will cost non-members $2.99 for smaller orders and $4.99 for larger ones.
According to Sucharita Kodali, a retail analyst with Forrester, Amazon's expansion plan 'does seem aggressive' but notes that many of the 500 cities may be small towns located in close proximity to one another. She also emphasizes that 'launching' in a town doesn't necessarily mean they will receive meaningful sales.
Amazon's drone delivery service is still in its experimental phase, with hundreds of thousands of packages already delivered this year. However, the company faces regulatory hurdles and challenges such as noise concerns and tree cover, which can make it difficult to find suitable drop zones for the drones.
