Amazon Expands Drone Delivery Service to Nearly 500 Municipalities
Amazon announced plans to significantly expand its Prime Air drone delivery service, which currently offers aerial deliveries in cities across Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. By year's end, the company will bring Prime Air to metropolitan areas in Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho, and New York, growing the number of municipalities where the service is available sixfold to nearly 500.
The expansion enables customers to use Prime Air for items that weigh up to five pounds and fit in a large shoebox. Amazon claims this category encompasses more than 60% of its most popular goods on its e-commerce platform, with most orders arriving within an hour, or as quickly as 30 minutes.
The MK30 drone, which transports packages from the nearest Amazon warehouse to users' homes at an altitude of up to 250 feet, is equipped with cameras, lidar units, and sensors that enable it to avoid collisions. The sensor suite is optimized for challenging conditions such as light rain and elevated dust levels.
