Amazon Expands Healthcare Reach with Discounted Weight-Loss Drugs
Amazon is expanding its healthcare reach by offering eligible Medicare patients discounted GLP-1 weight-loss drugs through Amazon Pharmacy. The move, part of a federal program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, allows patients to pay $50 per month for approved prescriptions.
The participating medications include Novo Nordisk's injectable and oral versions of Wegovy, Eli Lilly's Zepbound KwikPen, and Lilly's recently launched oral drug Foundayo. Patients can enter their Medicare identification and Bridge insurance information through Amazon Pharmacy, which will manage eligibility verification, billing, and paperwork.
Amazon plans to extend same-day prescription delivery to nearly 4,500 communities by year-end, using its logistics network to compete on convenience as well as price. While the financial impact of this initiative is expected to be modest, it gives Amazon a foothold in one of healthcare's fastest-growing drug categories.
The program has some limitations, including a scheduled expiration date of December 31, 2027, and potential policy risks tied to reimbursement economics and drug availability.
