Amazon Expands Prime Air Drone Delivery to Richmond Region
Amazon is expanding its Prime Air drone delivery service to the Richmond area. The online retail giant plans to introduce the autonomous drone program, which delivers packages to customers in a matter of minutes, to Henrico County, Greater Richmond, and Hanover County.
The company has announced that it will hold an open-house meeting on August 27 from 4-8 p.m. at the Richmond Raceway to discuss the service with local residents. The event will feature presentations at 6 and 7 p.m., and attendees can learn more about how Prime Air works and what areas it will cover.
According to Amazon, its drones are equipped with onboard sensors and cameras to travel safely, and they operate under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. The company says that nearly all items weighing 5 pounds or less, which fit into a large shoebox, can be delivered by drone, including electronics, groceries, household products, and cosmetics.
Amazon Prime members will receive free delivery on orders of $50 or more, while non-Prime members will pay about $5 for the service. The company says that it has received an overwhelmingly positive response to Prime Air in areas where it is already available, and it expects to expand the service to nearly 500 American cities and towns by the end of 2026.
