Amazon Eyes Exclusive Rights Deal for Emmy Awards
The Television Academy is set to leave broadcast television for the first time in its history after it emerged that Amazon was in talks to strike a rights deal. The deal, which would begin next year, marks a major step change for the TV Academy, which has been searching for a new partner.
The current broadcast wheel approach, where each network airs the ceremony once every four years, ended this year after more than two decades. Amazon is now in talks to take over the rights deal, potentially marking a shift towards streaming as other awards ceremonies have done.
According to reports, not all of the broadcast networks felt the same about keeping airing the Emmys, particularly given that their number of wins continues to dwindle. This year, Amazon won only five awards across the three nights, largely for its Spider-Noir series.
