Amazon Eyes Homer City Site for Data Center Campus
Amazon has expressed interest in building a data center campus at the proposed Homer City natural gas-fueled power plant in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The company is evaluating multiple sites across the commonwealth as part of its commitment to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania.
The power plant, under construction on a 3,200-acre site, is expected to go online in 2028 and will be fueled by natural gas. Amazon has previously announced plans for two major data center campuses in central and eastern Pennsylvania.
According to emails obtained from the state government through Right to Know requests, David Wade, chief of staff for Pennsylvania's Office of Transformation and Opportunity, has been in discussions with Becky Ford, principal of economic development for Global Infrastructure Expansion at Amazon Web Services. The DEP is happy to be a resource in helping HCR navigate wastewater treatment, as mentioned by Wade in an August 2025 email.
Homer City Generation, the company behind the power plant, expects an initial capital investment exceeding $10 billion to prepare the site and build the power infrastructure. Knighthead Capital Management is providing $15 billion for the Homer City project, announced by President Trump at the Pittsburgh Energy and Innovation Summit in July.
