Amazon Faces Scrutiny Over Mislabelled Food Products Seized by Indian Inspectors
Amazon is reviewing findings from an Indian state's food inspectors after they seized mislabelled and expired food products from two of its warehouses in Bengaluru. The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration conducted inspections at Amazon's storage and supply units, where they found products worth $59,000 with 'incorrect/inadequate' labelling or past their expiry date.
The officials also seized medicines worth $4,232 stored without a valid license. In response to the inspection, Amazon said it is reviewing the observations and will take necessary steps as required. The company claims to have robust systems and controls in place to prevent products that do not meet regulatory requirements from being listed on its Indian website or entering fulfillment centers.
Industry sources confirm that Amazon is strengthening internal controls to ensure lapses do not recur. This move comes after a regulator raid on an unrelated Mumbai warehouse where fake nutritional details and expiry dates were allegedly added to products from companies like PepsiCo, Nestle, Unilever, and Coca-Cola.
