Amazon Flies Drones Over Richmond Without Clearances

Amazon is moving forward with its Prime Air drone delivery service in Richmond, Virginia, despite not yet having the necessary approvals to operate. According to an Amazon aerospace integration specialist, Carmen Simboli, the company is still waiting on federal and landlord sign-off before launching the service.

Simboli presented the MK30 drone to a community meeting at Richmond Raceway, highlighting its capabilities and addressing concerns from attendees. The MK30 stands 5.5 feet tall, spans 5 feet, weighs 78 pounds empty, and is equipped with six motors and six cameras.

The service will be available to eligible addresses within a 7.5-mile radius of Amazon's RIC4 fulfillment center in Henrico County. Richmond residents can expect free delivery on orders over $50 for Prime members, while non-members will pay $2.99 below that threshold. Non-members pay $4.99.

Simboli acknowledged the need for federal and landlord approvals before launching the service, stating that Amazon is still working to secure these clearances. The company has promised to bring its Prime Air service to nearly 500 US cities and towns by December 31.
