Amazon Hikes Prices on Consumer Electronics Amid Memory-Chip Shortage
Amazon has increased prices on several of its consumer electronics products due to soaring memory-chip costs. The company's hardware business is being affected by the AI boom, which is causing a supply crunch and rising component costs.
The price increases have been reported for Echo speakers, Fire TV devices, Kindle e-readers, and eero routers. Some prices are rising by as much as 60%. For example, the basic Echo Dot will now cost $79.99, up from $49.99.
A report found that the sudden price increases affected streaming sticks, e-readers, smart speakers, and home networking equipment. Amazon cited 'significant increases' in memory-component prices as the reason for the hikes.
The increased demand for memory chips is being driven by cloud companies and data-center operators locking up more chips for AI infrastructure. This has led to a 23% increase in software, hardware, and storage price indices since the end of 2024.
