Amazon Joins Exclusive Club as First Trillion-Dollar Company Without Dividends
Amazon's market value recently surpassed $3 trillion, making it one of the few companies to reach this milestone. Among its peers, Amazon stands out as the only company that has never paid a dividend to shareholders.
The reason for Amazon's decision not to pay dividends is due to its massive capital spending, which exceeded $220 billion in 2026 and is expected to continue at similar levels. This spending is focused on expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) capacity, particularly in artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
Despite generating significant operating cash flow of $161.4 billion over the past 12 months, Amazon's free cash flow was an outflow of $7.6 billion due to its high capital expenditures. CEO Andy Jassy stated that even with $220 billion allocated for capacity expansion, the company will still require additional funds in future years.
The absence of a dividend is a deliberate choice by Amazon's management, who believe that investing in AWS and other areas will generate greater returns than paying out dividends to shareholders.
