Amazon Locks Down 5% Stake in OpenAI with $50 Billion Investment
Amazon has completed its $50 billion investment in OpenAI, securing a 5% stake and making it one of the company's core shareholders. This move gives OpenAI substantial financial firepower and signals that Amazon's dual-track AI strategy is fully formed.
The investment was completed early, despite neither of the two key trigger conditions being met. According to regulatory filings, Amazon invested $13.7 billion in the second quarter and an additional $21.3 billion after June, totaling $50 billion. OpenAI's valuation has soared to approximately $852 billion.
A critical turning point for Amazon was Microsoft's relaxation of cloud exclusivity on April 27. This allowed Amazon's cloud division, AWS, to provide services to OpenAI, clearing legal and commercial obstacles. The new agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft no longer grants Microsoft exclusive Azure hosting rights or a revenue share.
Amazon is also investing in Anthropic, another leading AI lab, with a total committed investment of up to $33 billion. This dual bet demonstrates Amazon's ambition, refusing to put all its eggs in one basket. By channeling Trainium into the model training workflows of both OpenAI and Anthropic, Amazon aims to carve out a foothold in the underlying hardware market.
