Amazon MGM Studios Hires Netflix Vet Andy Weil as Head of Comedy
Amazon MGM Studios has appointed Andy Weil as its new Head of Comedy. Weil joins from Netflix, where he spent over 11 years leading comedy development. He will report directly to Peter Friedlander, who announced his hire internally via email.
Friedlander launched the search for a Head of Comedy in June and tweaked the studio's scripted operation structure to create three areas: Drama, Comedy, and Young Adult. Weil is the latest senior executive to join Amazon MGM Studios from Netflix, following appointments like Blair Fetter and Jenn Levy. He has deep creative instincts and a proven track record in identifying standout series like Master of None, Nobody Wants This, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Black Mirror, BoJack Horseman, and Tires.
Weil's first day at Amazon MGM Studios is September 14. The studio's current comedy slate includes hits in the YA arena, Overcompensating and Elle, as well as the Emmy-nominated anthology Jury Duty. Ride or Die, a breakout hourlong comedy-drama, is awaiting word on Season 2 renewal.
