Amazon Nears 1 GW of Wind Power in Sweden with Sweeping New Deals
Amazon is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity in Europe by signing four new power purchase agreements (PPAs) for wind farms in Sweden. The deals bring Amazon's total carbon-free energy capacity in the country to nearly 1 gigawatt, enough to power over 350,000 Swedish households annually.
The e-commerce giant has already invested in nine utility-scale wind energy projects in Sweden and is now looking to power its growing data center needs with clean electricity. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported last year that electricity demand from data centers jumped by 17%, while AI-focused data centers surged even faster, soaring by 50%.
Amazon's new PPAs in Sweden are part of the company's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and meet its growing energy demands. The deals will provide financial certainty for developers Eolus AB and OX2 AB to move forward with construction of the four wind farms.
