Amazon Picks East Austin for Multi-Billion Dollar Robotics Facility
Amazon has chosen East Austin as the location for its multi-billion dollar advanced robotics manufacturing facility. The project, which is expected to create between 300-500 jobs in manufacturing and engineering, will be located off Hergotz and Dalton lanes in the center of the over 2,600-acre Dog's Head area.
The new facility will produce robots that work with Amazon employees to handle repetitive tasks and heavy lifting. This investment is a significant one for Austin, which already has more than 17,000 Amazon employees and has seen the company invest over $100 billion in Texas since 2010.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised Amazon's decision, saying 'Amazon asked for no economic incentives, no public money.' He added that this development will create hundreds of family-sustaining careers and demonstrate Amazon's commitment to Austin's long-term success. The project is also expected to add to the city's tax base, which will help pay for necessary city services.
The Dog's Head area requires upgrades like roads and utility lines to support additions like the Amazon facility, as well as thousands of residences and millions of square feet of other mixed-use development anticipated by Endeavor Real Estate Group. A portion of the city's rising tax revenue there will be used to reimburse Endeavor's infrastructure costs.
Amazon Vice President Holly Sullivan said in a statement that Austin's talented workforce, world-class universities, and strong community partnerships make it an ideal location for this facility.
