Amazon Prime Air Drones Set for 500 US City Expansion
Amazon's Prime Air autonomous drone delivery service is set to expand its reach to nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026. This six-fold increase in locations will bring the benefits of ultrafast, environmentally friendly deliveries to tens of millions of customers.
The expansion relies heavily on Amazon's 'highly autonomous' flight software, which allows drones to navigate obstacles and make real-time decisions without human intervention. The system includes a Detect-and-Avoid feature that scans airspace and surroundings for potential hazards.
Amazon has obtained FAA Part 135 certification, the highest tier of oversight available to drone delivery operations, allowing it to operate in metro areas without requiring separate waivers.
The company emphasizes safety features, including advanced landing systems that can bring drones down safely in severe weather or other unexpected events. Noise levels during deliveries are comparable to those from a window fan on low setting, Amazon claims.
