Amazon Responds to NYC Mayor's Cease-and-Desist Letters Over Prohibited E-Bikes
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sent cease-and-desist letters to 40 major retailers, including Amazon, Target, and Wayfair, over the sale of prohibited motorized scooters and e-bikes. The mayor's office claims that some of these products exceed the legal speed limits and wattage limits set by the city.
The prohibited items include high-speed e-bikes, stand-up e-scooters, and other devices that cannot legally be operated on New York City streets. According to Mamdani, these vehicles can reach speeds over 30 miles per hour, which is a major safety concern for cyclists in the city.
A spokesperson for Amazon stated that the company will 'look into the products in question' and has no issue working with the mayor and City Council to address the issue. Amazon also emphasized its commitment to safety and the requirement of e-bikes sold on their platform to meet applicable safety standards and Amazon policies.
