Amazon Scraps Stargate Series Amid Concerns Over Niche Audience
Amazon's Stargate series was greenlit in November 2025 with Martin Gero serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. The series would have featured a new story, not a reboot of the original, according to Richard Dean Anderson.
The story would have followed Daniel Jackson, played by Michael Shanks, as a conduit to take viewers from the original universe to a new generation. However, in June 2026, Amazon canceled the series reportedly due to concerns that it would only appeal to die-hard fans.
Anderson believes the cancellation was due to disagreements over who would control the show, and not because of any creative issues with Gero's vision. 'Something has gone awry in the negotiations,' Anderson said. The campaign to #SaveStargate has been ongoing for months, with a Change.org petition reaching 123,134 signatures.
