Amazon Slams Proposed New York City Bill Targeting Last-Mile Delivery Model
New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani is calling on Amazon to follow 'the rules' in its delivery model. He has endorsed a bill, known as the Delivery Protection Act, that would increase oversight of facilities used for last-mile deliveries.
The legislation aims to require operators of these facilities to obtain licenses through the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. It also targets Amazon's use of Delivery Service Partners (DSPs), which are independent businesses that employ drivers who deliver Amazon packages.
Amazon has pushed back against the proposal, warning that it could hurt small businesses that handle its deliveries across New York City. The company claims that the legislation could put over 5,000 jobs at risk and disrupt agreements with more than 40 local DSPs that employ thousands of New Yorkers.
