Amazon Slumps Under Weight of $220 Billion Capital Spending Plan
Amazon shares took a slight dip last Friday, slipping 0.5% to $258.72, as investors digested the company's massive capital spending plans and weak discretionary demand in the retail sector.
The e-commerce giant is set to pour approximately $220 billion into AI infrastructure, data centers, and cloud capacity this year, a whopping sum that has left some analysts questioning when the spending will translate into real cash flow.
Despite posting impressive second-quarter sales of $200.6 billion, representing a 20% jump from last year, Amazon's operating income came in at $27.5 billion, with AWS revenue surging 37% to $42.2 billion.
The company's focus on AI and cloud services has driven growth, but it also comes with significant expenses. Management is betting that the investments will pay off in the long run, but investors are getting increasingly anxious about Amazon's ability to defend its retail margins while convincing AWS customers to continue funding their massive technology budgets.
