Amazon Snaps Up DuckLabs to Boost S3 Data Analysis Capabilities
Amazon has agreed to acquire DuckLabs, the company behind the open-source database DuckDB. The acquisition will add the team behind DuckDB to Amazon Web Services (AWS), including co-founders and creators Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt. They will remain based in Amsterdam and continue leading the development of DuckDB.
The deal is part of Amazon's broader push to turn its S3 cloud storage service into a place where customers can analyze data, rather than just store it. AWS VP Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec wrote that DuckDB is naturally optimized for AI agents, which query data in the same way people do.
Amazon says it is not acquiring the DuckDB open-source project itself, and it will remain free and open source under the MIT license. The related projects, DuckLake and Quack, will also remain open source.
