Amazon Stock Dips as AWS Experiences Disruptions in Persian Gulf
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been experiencing disruptions to its services in parts of the Persian Gulf due to damage sustained during the U.S.-Iran war. The company announced that it cannot restore access to certain customer data stored in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, with damage beyond what AWS's systems were built to handle.
The affected facilities in Bahrain were hit early in the conflict in March, with satellite images later showing strikes on two facilities there. Most customers in Bahrain shifted their workloads to other countries after the first strikes, but further damage in April wiped out the remaining data center network in the country. In the UAE, Amazon said many customers were able to restore operations by using backups or copying data that stayed reachable.
The company is still unable to access data stored in one UAE availability zone, with engineers working to recover resources in two others. Additionally, Amazon has paused work with air carrier 21 Air following a deadly crash of an Amazon-branded cargo plane in Miami. This pause affects only a small slice of Amazon's Prime Air network.
