Amazon Stock Surges 14% on Strong Q2 Earnings
Amazon's stock price surged 14% in July, outperforming the market. The S&P 500 index was flat during this period, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index declined by 3.2%. This significant jump in Amazon's stock price can be attributed to its strong Q2 results.
The company reported quarterly revenue of $200.6 billion, a 20% increase from last year. Net income was $62.6 billion, or $5.75 per share, up 242% from the same period last year. The quarter's net income included a non-operating pre-tax 'other income' of $53.4 billion, primarily from Amazon's investments in Anthropic.
AWS, Amazon's cloud computing services business, saw its sales increase by 37% to $42.2 billion. This growth was driven by strong demand for AI capabilities. AWS's operating income was $16.6 billion, up a whopping 63%. CEO Andy Jassy praised the company's record delivery speeds in the first half of the year.
Looking ahead, Amazon expects revenue between $197.0 billion and $202.0 billion in Q3, representing year-over-year growth of 9% to 12%. Operating income is expected to be between $22.5 billion and $26.5 billion, compared with $17.4 billion in the prior year's quarter.
