Amazon Sued by Navy Veteran Over Severe Burns from Tabletop Fire Pit

San Diego resident Anthony Trevino is suing Amazon and two companies involved in the manufacture of tabletop fire pits after suffering severe third-degree burns to his face, neck, and upper body. The incident occurred when Trevino attempted to refill one of these fire pits, which are fueled by isopropyl alcohol.

According to his attorney, Jeremy Robinson, a phenomenon known as 'flame jetting' caused the accident, where a flame travels back up a stream of liquid fuel into its container. This resulted in a 'flame thrower or fireball' that gave Trevino catastrophic burns.

The lawsuit alleges that Amazon bears some responsibility for selling these products to consumers and profiting from their sale. Robinson stated that the fuel burns at over 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit, causing third-degree burns that are extremely painful and difficult to treat long-term.

Trevino reflected on his injuries in a statement released by his law firm, saying 'My whole life, my job was to pull people out of danger. I can't undo what happened to me.'

Amazon responded to the incident by stating that the products had been recalled and removed from their website in October 2024. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also issued a consumer alert in 2024, warning against the use of these types of fire pits due to their extreme danger.
