Amazon Sued Over Alleged Seafood 'Greenwashing' Claims

A proposed class action lawsuit alleges that Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) has been 'greenwashing' its seafood labels, misleading consumers about the environmental impact of its products.

The complaint targets many seafood brands sold on Amazon's platform, including Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea, StarKist, and Amazon's own 365 by Whole Foods Market.

The plaintiffs claim that Amazon's sustainability marketing is unsubstantiated or materially false because most fishing vessels are not publicly tracked, while some obscure their whereabouts by disabling electronic devices known as transponders.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages, punitive damages and restitution for alleged violations of Washington consumer protection laws.
