Amazon Sued Over Tabletop Fire Pit That Left Navy Vet with Severe Burns

San Diego resident and former U.S. Navy helicopter search-and-rescue swimmer Anthony Trevino is suing Amazon and two companies involved in the manufacture of a tabletop fire pit after suffering third-degree burns to his face, neck, and upper body.

The incident occurred when Trevino attempted to refill the fire pit, which is fueled by isopropyl alcohol, resulting in a flame jetting event. This phenomenon occurs when a flame travels back up a stream of liquid fuel into its container, causing a 'flame thrower or fireball' effect.

The lawsuit alleges that Amazon bears some responsibility for the incident because it made the product publicly available to consumers through its website and processed the transaction.

Amazon responded by stating that the products had been recalled in October 2024 and were no longer available on its website, citing a consumer alert from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission identifying these types of fire pits as extremely dangerous.
