Amazon Sued Over Tabletop Firepit Explosion
A San Diego man is suing Amazon after he suffered severe burns from a tabletop firepit explosion in his home. The firepit, made by Colson, was recalled for safety issues in 2024 but was still available on Amazon's platform. Anthony Trevino, 31, attempted to refill the firepit and a 'flame jetting' explosion occurred, causing third-degree burns across his body.
Trevino's lawyers argue that Amazon failed to warn customers about the Colson model's safety risks and should be held liable for selling the product. This case is part of an emerging legal theory that has already led to Amazon facing liability in California cases.
Amazon attempted to facilitate the recall but only noted that the firepit 'may not meet current mandatory or voluntary safety standards,' according to the lawsuit. Trevino's lawyers say Amazon should be responsible for ensuring products on its platform are safe, especially since it takes a cut of every sale and recommends specific fuels.
