Amazon Surges on Profitability Breakout as AWS Drives Growth

Amazon.com's stock has experienced a significant surge of about 15% to roughly US$271, marking a sharp rerating for the company. This move is largely driven by Amazon's profitability breakout, with net profit reaching around US$62.6 billion and basic earnings per share coming in at US$5.82.

The numbers indicate a substantial increase from last year's quarter, with revenue rising to US$200.6 billion compared to US$167.7 billion in the same period last year. Net income, excluding extra items, has also seen a significant jump to US$62.6 billion from US$18.2 billion.

The cloud and AI services segment, led by AWS, has played a crucial role in this profitability reset. AWS delivered US$42.2 billion of revenue with US$16.6 billion of operating income, solidifying its position as a high-margin business.

However, the bear case highlights concerns about Amazon's retail business and rising regulation. The company's North America margins stood at around 7.9%, while international margins were lower at 4.1%. Heavy capital expenditures, with US$53.1 billion spent in one quarter, have also put pressure on free cash flow.

The UK and EU oversight of cloud as critical infrastructure signals that regulatory constraints are building around Amazon's higher-margin business. This has raised concerns about the company's long-term profitability and potential structural fragility.
