Amazon Surpasses $3 Trillion Market Value on Strong Earnings
Amazon's market value surpassed $3 trillion for the first time on Monday after closing at $284.02, up more than 4%. The tech giant's second-quarter operating income rose 43% year over year to $27.5 billion, led by Amazon Web Services (AWS), which grew sales 37% year over year to $42.2 billion.
AWS' economics are a key factor in its success, with the cloud computing segment earning about $0.39 of operating income for every dollar of sales. This outpaces the rest of Amazon, which earned about $0.07 per dollar of sales.
To reach $4 trillion, Amazon would need a 31% gain from its current market value, putting its stock price around $371. While this may seem like a significant hurdle, profit growth is expected to continue, with the company's operating income guidance implying a 41% increase over last year.
The company's spending on AI capacity has led to an outflow of free cash flow for the trailing 12 months, but Amazon CEO Andy Jassy believes this will pay off in the long run as demand continues to grow. If Amazon achieves its forecasted revenue growth and operating income guidance, it could reach $4 trillion within the next year.
