Amazon Takes Stake in Electric Trucking Company, Deploys 500 Tesla Semis
Amazon's stake in Einride, a Swedish electric trucking company, has been revealed through SEC filings. The documents show that Amazon holds warrants for 25.2 million shares of Einride, which is approximately 12% of the company.
The warrants vest as Amazon purchases freight services from Einride, and this financial arrangement follows a pattern similar to one Amazon struck with Plug Power in 2017.
Einride plans to deploy 500 Tesla Semis for Amazon and other customers across North America. The trucks will serve Amazon and other Einride customers on freight corridors in California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, and Georgia.
This is the first time Tesla Semis will haul Amazon freight, and it marks a significant expansion of Amazon's electric trucking capabilities. The company has been turning to other manufacturers to electrify its freight network beyond the last-mile delivery vans it buys from Rivian.
