Amazon Toughens Kindle DRM, Cracks Down on Libby Loan Loophole
Amazon has rolled out two significant changes to its Kindle e-readers, sparking discontent among users. The first change affects the Digital Rights Management (DRM) system on most Kindle models, including the Oasis. A software update has added a new hardened DRM that makes it difficult for users to remove DRM from their books.
This means that users who want to read their Kindle books on other devices or borrow digital library books using Libby may face issues. The change is not limited to the Oasis, as most other Kindle models have also received this update, with only the Voyage remaining unaffected - for now.
The second change affects users of Libby loans. Previously, users could keep borrowed books beyond their due date by turning on airplane mode. However, a recent update has closed this loophole, prompting users to turn on Wi-Fi to access their loans.
