Amazon Unveils Ambitious Drone Delivery Expansion Plan
Amazon has announced an ambitious expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service, aiming to cover nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026. This sixfold growth will bring the network to major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, Boise, Chicago, Cleveland, and Syracuse, in addition to the existing 11 locations across the country.
The expanded Prime Air service relies on the MK30 drone, a fully electric aircraft capable of cruising at 73 mph and navigating light rain and winds exceeding 20 mph. Each local site serves a 175-square-mile radius, pushing packages weighing five pounds or less directly to customer driveways and backyards in around 60 minutes.
The expanded Prime Air service aims to execute one million annual deliveries, with hundreds of thousands already completed this year. Amazon is aggressively incentivizing the adoption of this futuristic fulfillment method through free ultrafast shipping for Prime members on orders exceeding $50, while smaller baskets incur a minimal $2.99 fee. Non-members pay a flat rate of $4.99.
