Amazon's $220 Billion AI Bet Looks Less Risky Amid Q2 Earnings Growth
Amazon's AI spending has been under scrutiny lately due to concerns that it may not be yielding meaningful earnings growth. However, recent Q2 earnings have shed some light on the company's plans for its $220 billion capital expenditure this year.
The retail and cloud giant revealed that the majority of this investment will go towards increasing AWS capacity, which has seen a 36% YoY growth in the second quarter. This growth is expected to continue, with Amazon already seeing demand exceed available capacity through 2027 and into 2028.
A key factor behind Amazon's confidence in its AI spending is the fact that servers break even in less than three years, while most of AWS' AI capacity is contracted for at least five years. This means that Amazon can expect a significant boost to free cash flow once these contracts are fulfilled.
Amazon's diversified business, including cloud computing, AI, advertising, logistics, and enterprise software, also supports its long-term case. The company's core business has shown no signs of slowing down, with revenue climbing 20% YoY in the second quarter to $200.6 billion.
