Amazon's Ad Auctions Under Fire as FTC Sues Over Price Manipulation

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing it of manipulating ad auctions to artificially inflate ad prices. The suit centers on 'second-price auctions,' which allow advertisers to bid high without necessarily paying the full amount.

Amazon allegedly used a 'soft reserve', inserting its own synthetic bid into the mix, to raise auction prices without advertisers knowing. This scheme likely extracted more than $20 billion from advertisers since it began in late 2018.

Critics argue that Amazon's ad business will not be severely impacted, as advertisers decide where to spend based on performance rather than auction mechanics. If Amazon were forced to change its auction dynamics, ad prices could fall, benefiting both the platform and advertisers.
