Amazon's Custom Chip Business Hits $25 Billion Run Rate Amid AI Computing Boom
Amazon's custom chip business has reached a significant milestone, crossing a $25 billion annual run rate. This achievement demonstrates the growing demand for Amazon's customized artificial intelligence (AI) chips, which are designed to optimize computing performance and reduce costs.
The company's entry into the semiconductor chipset market is driven by the need for purpose-built computing units that can deliver better results than general-purpose GPUs from Nvidia. Alphabet was one of the first companies to introduce custom AI chips, with its tensor processing unit (TPU) chipsets offering comparable performance at a lower price point.
Amazon's Trainium2 AI chips offer about a 30% better price-performance than GPUs and have been in high demand, leading to sold-out capacity. The company is also preparing to launch Trainium4 chips in 2027 or 2028, which are expected to be highly sought after.
