Amazon's Drone Delivery Falls Flat as Zipline Soars Ahead
A recent incident in Richmond, Texas, has put Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery service under scrutiny. On August 17, an Amazon Prime Air drone dropped a package into Lindsey Austen's swimming pool while attempting to deliver dry cat food and insoles. This is not the first time a Prime Air drone has misjudged its landing spot, with another incident occurring just last year when a package was blown into a pool by the drone's downwash.
The issue lies in the design of Amazon's Prime Air drones. The MK30 aircraft weighs up to 83 pounds at takeoff and carries a maximum payload of only 5 pounds. This means that the majority of the weight is unnecessary machinery, which is contributing to the problem of inaccurate landings.
In contrast, Zipline's Platform 2 delivery system has been successful in addressing this issue. The system uses a hovering mothership and an autonomous droid on a tether to deliver packages with precision. This approach has been shown to be effective in urban areas, where precise delivery is crucial.
Amazon plans to expand its Prime Air service to nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026, but if the pool videos continue to accumulate, it may be a challenge for the company to meet this goal. Zipline's success in delivering packages with accuracy and precision has put pressure on Amazon to reevaluate its drone delivery design.
