Amazon's Record-Breaking Spending Spree: Will History Repeat Itself?
Amazon is investing heavily in its operations, planning to spend about $220 billion in capital expenditures for 2026. This is the largest such program in its history.
A look at Amazon's past shows that heavy investment coincided with annual net losses in two instances: 2014 and 2022. In both years, the company's operating income nearly disappeared or halved, respectively.
However, each of these years was followed by significant rebounds in the stock price. In 2015, Amazon's shares rose 118% after swinging back to a profit. Similarly, in 2023, the stock rebounded 81% after net income came in at $30.4 billion.
The company's CEO, Andy Jassy, has raised the capital expenditure estimate from $200 billion in July. The spending is not just limited to this year; Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Nvidia have announced plans to add more graphics processing units (GPUs) to AWS's infrastructure in 2027 and 2028.
