Amazon's Rekognition Technology at Center of Wrongful Arrest Lawsuit
A St. Louis, Missouri man spent 17 months in jail after being wrongly identified by facial recognition technology developed by Amazon.
Christopher Gatlin's arrest and prosecution stemmed from a poor quality image of a masked suspect, which was used to identify him as the attacker of a MetroLink security guard.
The incident began on December 7, 2020, when a guard at the St. Charles Rock Road station in north St. Louis County suffered a traumatic brain injury during an assault.
Detectives obtained surveillance video showing the attackers and submitted one of their images to the St. Louis Mugshot Recognition Technology system, which returned Gatlin as a possible match despite his face being partially obscured by a hood and medical mask.
