AMD Instinct Systems Live in Saudi Arabia, Next Phase Targets 250MW Build-out
AMD's Instinct Systems have gone live in Saudi Arabia as part of a joint venture between AMD, HUMAIN, and Cisco. The systems utilize AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processing units (GPUs) paired with EPYC processors and Cisco networking to provide high-performance AI computing power for training models and running them once trained. This milestone marks the successful implementation of a network of AI computing centers that was first announced in May 2025.
The next phase of the project involves deploying up to 250 megawatts (MW) of additional AI infrastructure, built on AMD's upcoming Instinct MI400 series chips. Deployment is expected to begin in 2027, with the joint venture aiming to reach a total capacity of up to 1 gigawatt by 2030.
The value of this build-out can be estimated based on the original agreement between AMD and HUMAIN, which stated that they would invest up to $10 billion to deploy 500 megawatts of AI compute capacity over five years. This works out to approximately $20 million per megawatt, implying an investment of up to about $5 billion for the planned phase.
AMD's data center business has already seen significant growth, with revenue reaching $6.7 billion in the second quarter and expanding its share of total revenue from 42% to 58%. The company's AI opportunity is still largely future-facing, but deployments like this one demonstrate that commitments are turning into sales.
AMD CEO Lisa Su noted that 'Together, we are building an open, high-performance AI platform that is serving customers today and will scale significantly in the coming years.'
