AMD Poised to Seize Opportunity as Nvidia's CUDA Advantage Fades
Nvidia's long-held advantage in the graphics processing unit (GPU) market is facing a challenge. The company's CUDA software ecosystem has been its strongest competitive moat, making it difficult for customers to switch despite AMD's capable hardware.
However, as AI increasingly takes over software engineering tasks, that barrier may be weakening. According to DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng, Nvidia's CUDA moat is being dismantled rapidly because 'AI can write code. Building a software ecosystem is much easier than before.'
This could potentially give AMD, the world's second-largest GPU maker, an opportunity to challenge Nvidia. When Nvidia GPUs were in short supply, cloud service providers said they didn't switch to AMD hardware due to engineers' existing workflows around CUDA.
Recently, major AI cloud companies including OpenAI and Meta have announced large AMD GPU purchases. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown explained that, with the help of their own Claude model, it took just a weekend for them to bring up an AMD rack.
