AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE: A Budget GPU Worth Considering in Today's Broken Market
The PC component market is in disarray due to skyrocketing memory prices. As a result, gaming GPUs are now priced out of reach for many enthusiasts.
The author recalls when buying a 16GB version of last year's GeForce RTX 5060 Ti or Radeon RX 9060 XT was a no-brainer, but that's no longer the case. These cards now demand truly ridiculous sums: $788 for an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and $749 for a Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB.
A better option is the Intel Arc B580, a 12GB card still available for around $309.99. However, the most notable exception to this trend is the AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE, which can be had for its sub-$500 MSRP in both the US and UK.
The RX 9070 GRE may have only 12GB of VRAM, but it offers similar performance to an RTX 5070, with a few frames per second difference. In some cases, this cheaper GPU is even faster than the Nvidia option. The author notes that while the RX 9070 GRE lacks access to Nvidia's DLSS ecosystem, it still provides solid FHD and QHD performance across rasterised and ray-traced workloads.
