Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares surged 10% in late July 2026 after announcing a strategic partnership with AI company Anthropic. Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 series GPUs within Helios rack-scale systems, starting in the first half of 2027.

In return, AMD has committed to investing up to $5 billion in equity in Anthropic, contingent upon deployment milestones. This deal marks AMD's third major gigawatt-scale AI customer, following commitments with OpenAI and Meta.

The partnership underscores AMD's growing momentum in the AI accelerator market and raises questions about how far the company can close the gap with Nvidia, which dominates the industry with an estimated 75-81% share of AI accelerator revenue in 2026.
