AMD Surpasses Nvidia in AI Chip Market Growth
Nvidia has long been considered the leader in artificial intelligence (AI) chip technology. However, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is making significant strides and could potentially outrun Nvidia over the next three years.
AMD's entry into the AI market was relatively late compared to Nvidia, which began tailoring its graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI about a decade ago. However, AMD has been catching up quickly with its Instinct MI300 data center GPU family and Helios platform.
The company's data center revenue growth is impressive, more than doubling year-over-year in the second quarter of this year to $6.7 billion. This is a significant increase from just $6.5 billion for the full 2023 year.
Investors are taking notice of AMD's growth and have driven up the stock price. While this has pushed valuation higher, making it more expensive, aggressive investors may continue to buy shares in anticipation of future revenue growth.
