AMD Takes Aim at Nvidia's Ecosystem with Helios Rackscale System

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is poised to challenge Nvidia's dominance in AI server ecosystems with its Helios rackscale system, unveiled on July 23. Unlike previous battles where AMD focused on beating Intel in individual chip performance, this time the company targets Nvidia's ecosystem and business model.

The Helios system includes Instinct MI500 series GPUs, EPYC Verano CPUs, Pensando Vulcano networking equipment, and high-speed interconnect technologies. By offering a comprehensive AI computing solution, AMD aims to enable customers to purchase entire AI racks from the company instead of assembling hardware themselves.

Nvidia has had a 10-year head start in CUDA software and acquired Mellanox Technologies in 2020, giving it an advantage in networking equipment. However, AMD's new system represents a significant challenge for Nvidia in the rackscale domain.
