AMD Teams Up with Google on Next-Gen Hybrid TPU
Google and AMD are reportedly working together on a next-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) that combines CPU cores directly into the TPU processor package.
The design is aimed at workloads that combine artificial intelligence acceleration with conventional computing, such as reinforcement learning and emerging agentic AI tasks.
This integration of TPU and CPU resources into one package is not new, but it will significantly reduce latency by minimizing data transfer between the two chips.
Google's current TPUs are used in servers with standard X86 CPU processors, which can result in a considerable lag in communication between the two chips due to the distance between them.
