AMD vs Nvidia: Uncoupled Valuations Reveal Market Misconception
Nvidia and AMD have been two of the biggest beneficiaries in the AI race, but their valuations are now uncoupled. While Nvidia has a significant lead due to its superior GPUs at the start of the AI market, AMD's stock price is higher than Nvidia's. However, this discrepancy may be due to investors overvaluing AMD's growth potential.
Nvidia's net income is four times larger than AMD's revenue, but AMD's valuation is nearly three times that of Nvidia. If we look at the expected growth rates from Wall Street analysts, it seems Nvidia will continue to dominate the AI market. With a 140% gain in 2026 compared to Nvidia's 20%, investors may be pricing in too much success for AMD.
In order for AMD to reach the same valuation as Nvidia, its earnings would need to nearly triple after this year's growth is priced in. Considering Nvidia's continued dominance in the AI market, it seems unlikely that AMD can meet this expectation.
