American Airlines Abandons Airbus A350 for Boeing 787 Widebody
American Airlines has canceled its inherited Airbus A350 order in favor of Boeing's 787 widebody jet. In 2018, the airline opted for 47 Boeing 787s to replace 22 deferred Airbus A350-900 deliveries. The decision was made to simplify fleet operations and reduce costs by streamlining maintenance and training.
The move reflects a strategic shift towards Boeing's family of widebodies, reducing complexity across crew, parts, and ground handling. American Airlines cited fuel efficiency and operational simplicity as key drivers for the change. As a result, the airline has retired older widebody jets like the 767-300 and A330-300.
The decision means that travelers may see fewer A350 flights on American's international routes, potentially affecting cabin comfort and route frequency. The airline's reliance on Boeing could limit flexibility if market demand shifts or if maintenance bottlenecks arise across its consolidated widebody fleet.
