American Airlines Cuts International Expansion Plans Amid Aircraft Delivery Delays
American Airlines' international expansion plans have been scaled back due to aircraft delivery delays from Boeing and Airbus. The airline had expected to operate as many as 13 new long-haul routes, but only seven will be added in summer 2027.
Brian Znotins, Senior Vice President of Network Planning at American Airlines, explained that the carrier anticipated having approximately 13 additional long-haul aircraft available year over year. However, delivery delays reduced this expected increase by five aircraft.
The delayed deliveries have forced American to prioritize its expansion plans, focusing on strategically significant destinations. Philadelphia will gain nonstop service to Vienna and Porto, while Reykjavík will return to the carrier's network after a three-year hiatus.
